Don't trash
degradable plastics, top scientist urges
05/16/1990 Business Wire WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The man charged with standardizing testing for degradable plastics in the United States Wednesday called for the continued development of degradable plastic materials and urged environmentalists and political watchdogs not to stifle the fledgling industry. Dr. Ramani Narayan, head of the committee for establishing degradable plastics test protocols for the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM), told the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation chaired by Sen. Ernest F. Hollings (D-SC) that the adoption of standards for degradable plastics will eventually help diffuse consumer confusion over new beneficial plastic products. Degradable plastics are now used in some industrial packaging, grocery bags, disposable diapers, trash bags and other convenience products. We must ``design and engineer strong, lightweight, useful, disposable plastics that can break down under environmental conditions,'' Narayan said. He was speaking at the urging of the Degradable Plastics Council, an industry group encouraging research into the potential of degradable plastics technologies, including appropriate applications to help alleviate solid waste management problems. Narayan's comments, as well as a March 1990 article in Research & Development Magazine, contradicted recent criticism leveled by some environmentalists seeking to trash not only biodegradable plastics but plastics as a whole. In particular the senior scientist at Michigan Biotechnology Institute called for the use of biodegradable plastic in products such as disposable diapers, feminine hygiene products and surgical drapes and wraps that cannot be easily recycled.
