ARLINGTON, VA. (March 25, 5:10 p.m. EDT) -- Mitzi Emrich has resigned as director of the Progressive Bag Affiliates, six weeks after taking the job at the recently formed unit of the plastics division of the American Chemistry Council.
Emrich left March 21 to take a position at a public relations consulting firm that she had interviewed with during the same time she was interviewing with ACC, said Steve Russell, managing director of the plastics division of the Arlington, Va.-based trade association, in a telephone interview.
“She received a job offer that she very, very much wanted to do,” Russell said. “We are moving very quickly on replacing her. It is a top priority.”
Emrich previously worked as a conservation associate at the Sierra Club, where she had lobbied against federal policies that opened the door to more logging by timber companies.
PBA was formed in January by ACC to lead the industry’s effort to promote plastic bag recycling and to forestall additional plastic bag bans in the United States. It replaced the now-defunct Progressive Bag Alliance.
A plastic bag ban at supermarkets with more than 10,000 square feet that went into effect Nov. 20 in San Francisco is the only plastic bag ban in the United States. Enforcement of a similar ban in neighborhood Oakland has been delayed, pending a decision by Alameda County Superior Court on the ban’s legality.
Several other communities in the U.S. are considering plastic bag bans, including Santa Monica and Palo Alto in California, the counties of Sonoma and Mendocino in California and Hartford, Conn. Others are weighing mandatory in-store recycling programs.
